DESCRIPTION 1000-K Alternative Formula by Douglas Laboratories. contains a variety of nutrient rich green foods, herbals, plant extracts, and many other important phytonutrients that may support one's metabolic functions, including that of the immune system. FUNCTIONS Lycopene, lutein, alpha-, and beta-carotene, glutathione, as well as bioflavonoids, such as quercetin, are important antioxidant nutrients that protect healthy cells from oxidative and free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable chemicals formed in the body during metabolism and from exposure to environmental sources, such as pollution and cigarette smoke. They can attack and damage healthy cells, especially their membrane lipids and proteins. This, in turn, is thought to contribute to a number of degenerative health problems. Maitake, Shitake and Reishi mushrooms have important immune and cardiovascular benefits. The Reishi mushroom can act as an immunostimulant by activating macrophages and polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Green tea contains a variety of phytochemicals including polyphenols, methylxanthines, flavonoids, and triterpenoid saponins. The tea polyphenols, catechin, epi-catechin, epi-gallocatechin (EGC), and most notably EGC gallate act as antioxidants and support immune function and cardiovascular health. In vitro, these nutrients have been shown to inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis. Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) may help down regulate the formation of excessive levels of proinflammatory 2-series prostaglandins and other immune mediators. Cartilage powder contains chondroitin and glucosamine, a naturally occurring amino sugar found in glycosoaminoglycans, integral components of the proteoglycans found in joint cartilage. DESCRIPTION 5-HTP Plus Formula capsules, provided by Douglas Laboratories, contain 75 mg of natural L-5- hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) extracted from seeds of the Griffonia plant, together with 7.5 mg of pyridoxal-5-phosphate and 50 mg of a proprietary blend of the neurotransmitters L-tyrosine and Lglutamine. This product has been certified to be free of a contaminant, peak "x", implicated in a past incidence of dietary tryptophan-associated eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS). FUNCTIONS Serotonin, an important brain neurotransmitter, is key in the regulation of appetite, mood, and melatonin production. The presence of serotonin in the brain is associated with a balanced emotional state. This is achieved in part by decreasing the activity of certain excitatory hormones, including dopamine and noradrenaline. Serotonin also acts as a satiety signal in the brain, thereby naturally regulating food intake. Additionally, as a precursor of melatonin, serotonin is involved in regulating sleep patterns. Serotonin is unable to cross the blood-brain barrier and is therefore synthesized in the brain. Tryptophan, an essential amino acid, is a precursor for the synthesis of serotonin. Tryptophan crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to L-5-hydroxytryptophan, which in turn is converted into serotonin. Unfortunately, tryptophan faces many obstacles during its journey into brain tissue. First, dietary intake directly affects body levels of tryptophan, as the body can not endogenously produce it. High protein diets often provide greater amounts of tryptophan, yet higher carbohydrate diets appear to enhance tryptophan uptake into the brain. Secondly, tryptophan must compete with other amino acids for entry into the brain. Finally, tryptophan may be taken up by other tissues for protein or niacin synthesis, and thus is not exclusively for use by the brain. As a metabolic intermediate in the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, 5-HTP can also serve as a precursor of serotonin. 5-HTP offers a number of advantages over tryptophan. 5-HTP is derived naturally from the seeds of the Griffonia plant, unlike tryptophan which is produced synthetically or through bacterial fermentation. 5-HTP crosses into the brain more readily than tryptophan as it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier without competition for uptake. 5- HTP is significantly more effective than tryptophan; one 50 mg capsule of 5-HTP is roughly equivalent to 500 mg of tryptophan. Finally, research studies have shown 5-HTP to be safe at levels as high as 900 mg. As a result, 5-HTP is a safe and effective means of increasing brain serotonin levels. Elevated plasma homocysteine may be an independent risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. There are two distinct mechanisms for intestinal vitamin B12 absorption; receptor-mediated absorption and passive diffusion. In the first, vitamin B12 attaches to a salivary ¡§R-binder¡¨ protein which transports it into the small intestine, where vitamin B12 is released. The vitamin then binds to ¡§Intrinsic Factor¡¨ (IF), a glycoprotein normally produced by the gastric parietal cells. This vitamin B12-IF complex is carried down to the ileum, where it binds to mucosal receptors. Finally, the complex is absorbed and bound to serum vitamin B12-binding proteins. The second absorption mechanism, passive diffusion, does not require any carriers, such as B-binder or IF. Only about 1% of free vitamin B12 is passively absorbed, but this can be nutritionally significant with higher dietary vitamin B12 intakes. Almost 40% of the population is suggested to have ¡§low normal¡¨ plasma B12 levels. Strict vegetarians, the elderly, and, HIV/AIDS patients are often at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency, either due to low dietary intake or impaired absorption.
